During the 1970s, the world saw an average of 90 natural disasters each year. The number has increased to 450 over the last decade. Seven (7) out of 10 natural disasters are related to global warming and climate change. In the next decade, more frequent and intense storms and floods as well as persistent droughts are expected, which will have a serious impact on primary health care, ecological systems, food security, and human migration, or even contribute to conflicts as communities struggle over scarce water and natural resources.
In the face of growing frequency and intensity of disasters, World Vision International has established the Global Pre-positioning Resource Network (GPRN) to stock relief commodities for up to 500,000 beneficiaries in warehouses strategically located around the world. Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs (HEA) regional teams have also been set up to respond in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
In Taiwan, World Vision also pre-positions emergency supplies in disaster-prone areas, launches disaster management programs, and conducts disaster prevention exercises in order to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on children and families.
