30 Hour Famine around the world

1971: World Vision’s first famine held in Canada
1990: The first famine held in Taiwan
Today: Over 1 million donors and participants have participated in Taiwan

In 1971, a group of church youths in Alberta, Canada fasted together for 36 hours to raise funds for the hungry in Ethiopia.

Over 1.6 million people in the world have participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine, including youth in Canada, Taiwan, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, and Africa.

While famine durations vary across countries – 40 hours in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa; 30 hours in Taiwan, the United States, and Canada; 24 hours in UK and Korea; and 8 hours for elderly participants in Hong Kong – we are all going hungry for a singular purpose, to help those in need.

World Vision Taiwan introduced the concept of open famine in 2006, encouraging people from across Taiwan to organize their own famine events. The DIY (do-it-yourself) Famine has since then received a record-high attendance every year.
